MOQ Explained: Minimum Order Quantities for Custom Ceramic Tableware

MOQ โ€” minimum order quantity โ€” is one of the first things a B2B buyer asks about, and one of the most misunderstood. Buyers often see a 500-piece MOQ and immediately think the factory is trying to squeeze them. In reality, MOQ requirements in ceramic manufacturing are driven by physics, not greed.

This guide explains what MOQ means in the context of ceramic tableware manufacturing, why the numbers are what they are, and how to work with them as a new or growing buyer.

Why Does MOQ Exist in Ceramic Manufacturing?

Ceramics are fundamentally a batch production process. Here’s what happens when you place an order:

  1. The kiln fires in batches. A tunnel kiln in a Chaozhou factory runs 24 hours a day and fires hundreds of pieces at a time. Setting the temperature profile for a specific glaze colour uses up a portion of that run โ€” if you only order 50 pieces, the factory is wasting most of that run on empty space or on someone else’s order.
  2. Glazes are mixed in minimum batches. A custom glaze colour (Pantone match, reactive glaze, etc.) requires a minimum amount of raw material to mix properly and to achieve colour consistency. A 2 kg glaze batch might produce 100 cups. You can’t mix half a batch.
  3. Decal screens have fixed costs. If you want your logo or a custom pattern on the piece, a screen (or digital transfer) must be made. That screen costs the same whether you fire 50 pieces or 5,000. The factory needs enough volume to amortise the setup cost.
  4. Quality control sampling. Ceramic factories perform destructive testing (breaking pieces to check wall thickness, density, glaze adhesion) on a percentage of every batch. Small orders make this statistically meaningless.

Typical MOQ Ranges โ€” By Order Type

1. Stock Items (Existing Designs, No Customisation)

If you’re ordering a product that already exists in the factory’s catalogue โ€” same shape, same glaze, same decoration โ€” the MOQ is at its lowest:

  • Typical MOQ: 100โ€“300 pieces per SKU
  • Lead time: 15โ€“30 days
  • Why so low? The factory can batch your order with other buyers ordering the same product. No setup cost to amortise.

Best for: First-time buyers testing a new product category, small retailers with limited warehouse space, buyers who need quick replenishment.

2. Semi-Custom (Existing Shape, Custom Colour or Glaze)

You like the shape from the catalogue but want it in your brand colour, a reactive glaze, or a specific Pantone.

  • Typical MOQ: 300โ€“500 pieces per colour
  • Lead time: 30โ€“45 days
  • Why higher? A new glaze batch must be mixed specifically for your order, and colour consistency testing is needed before mass production starts.

Best for: Brand owners who want exclusivity on colour but don’t need a unique shape. Great for private-label retail ranges.

3. Full Custom OEM (New Shape + Your Branding + Custom Packaging)

You have a design concept (or an existing product you want improved), want your logo on every piece, and need custom gift packaging.

  • Typical MOQ: 500โ€“1,000 pieces per SKU
  • Lead time: 45โ€“60 days (after sample approval)
  • One-time tooling/mould cost: USD 200โ€“800 per shape (depending on complexity)
  • Why higher? New moulds must be made and amortised. New decal screens (for logos/patterns) must be produced. Multiple rounds of sampling are needed to get the design right before mass production.

Best for: Established brands launching a new product line, hospitality groups with strict branding standards, retailers who want 100% exclusive products.

How to Negotiate MOQ as a Smaller Buyer

Not every buyer comes in with a 1,000-piece budget. Here’s how to work productively with a manufacturer even if your volumes are smaller:

Ask About Mixed SKU Orders

Some factories allow you to meet the MOQ across multiple SKUs. For example, instead of 300 pieces of one item, you might order 100 pieces of three different items in the same glaze. Ask specifically: “Can we combine different products to reach the MOQ if they use the same glaze?”

Start with Stock, Build to Custom

Place your first order with stock items to test the market and build a relationship with the factory. Once you know which products sell, place a custom order with the confidence of real sales data behind you.

Request a Paid Sample First

Before committing to any production order, request a physical sample. Most factories charge USD 30โ€“100 per sample (deductible from your first order). This lets you verify quality before you commit to volume.

Be Honest About Your Growth Trajectory

Good factories think long-term. If you explain that you’re a growing brand placing your first order but expect to double or triple volume within 12 months, many sales managers will approve lower MOQs as an investment in the relationship.

What Happens if You Order Below MOQ?

Most manufacturers will decline or simply not quote below their stated MOQ. In some cases, they’ll offer to accommodate a below-MOQ order with a surcharge โ€” typically 10โ€“30% added to the unit price to cover setup inefficiencies. This can make sense for a buyer who needs a very small test run.

Be cautious of suppliers who have no stated MOQ, or claim they can produce 10 pieces of anything. These are usually trading companies, not factories โ€” they’re aggregating orders and adding a margin. You lose control of quality and transparency.

Fiona Lian — Sales Manager, Artstar HomewaresOur most requested item is a 350ml mug, and the most common friction point for first-time buyers is our 300-piece MOQ. The reason is kiln economics โ€” a kiln load is fixed, so producing 50 pieces costs nearly the same in energy and labour as producing 300. Factories that quote MOQ 50 on custom work are either losing money on your order or cutting somewhere you won’t notice until the goods arrive.
